“Open when…” letters for new parents

Your kid is about to find out what you already know: a new baby means no sleep, a lot of crying (not all of it the baby’s) and more love than seems possible. These letters are for the 3 a.m. feedings and the first smiles, from someone who’s been there.

Each idea comes with a starter letter. The parts in [brackets] are where your own memories go.

Make them with Whenvelope

Baby days

Open when your baby arrives

Welcome to the world, [baby’s name]! 💕 The first time we held you, [a memory of the day they were born]. Now it’s your turn, and we can’t believe how lucky this little one is. We love you all so much.

Open when it’s your first night home with the baby

Nobody knows what they’re doing the first night home. We sure didn’t: [a story from your first night home with them]. Sleep when the baby sleeps (we know, we know). And don’t cook. Dinner’s on us.

Gift card idea: DoorDash.

Open when you haven’t slept in days

This part is so hard, and it doesn’t last forever. We promise. When you were a baby, [a story about their sleep, or lack of it]. Here’s a coffee on us. Make it a big one.

Gift card idea: Starbucks.

Open when the baby won’t stop crying

Deep breath. Run through the list: hungry? Diaper? Too warm or too cold? Tired? Needs a burp? If none of that works, it’s okay to lay the baby down safely in the crib and step away for a few minutes to breathe. If something doesn’t feel right, call [your pediatrician’s number]. Trust your gut. You know this baby best.

Open when you need a break

You can’t pour from an empty cup. Hand the baby to [your partner, or us] and take an hour for yourself. Shower. Nap. Go for a walk. Sit in the car and listen to music. All of it counts. You’re doing an amazing job.

Open when you feel like you’re doing it all wrong

You’re not. The fact that you worry about it means you’re a good parent. We made plenty of mistakes too: [a new-parent mistake you made]. You turned out pretty great. And if the hard days start piling up, talk to your doctor. Lots of new parents need support, and asking for it is brave.

Open when the baby smiles for the first time

THERE it is! 😊 That first smile makes up for every sleepless night, doesn’t it? Your first smile was [when, or what made them smile]. Take a picture and send it to us immediately.

Open when you’re out of diapers (again)

How does someone so small go through so many diapers? This one’s for the next run. Get the wipes too.

Open when you want to see your own baby pictures

Here’s you at that age. Look familiar? [A caption or memory for the photos] You were worth every sleepless night, and so is this one.

Open when you need backup

Say the word and we’re there. [How fast you can get there, or who nearby can help]. Nobody is supposed to do this alone. Calling us isn’t giving up; it’s what family is for.

Open when it’s the baby’s first birthday

Happy first birthday, [baby’s name]! 🎈 And happy first birthday to you two as parents. You made it through a whole year, and we are so proud of you. [A favorite moment from this year]

Hard days

Open when you’re having a bad day

Some days are just heavy, and that’s okay. It doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong. When I had a day like this at your age, [a time you struggled and what got you through]. Go get some fresh air, drink some water, and remember: tomorrow is a brand new page.

Open when you’re stressed out

Deep breath. In for four, hold for four, out for four. You have handled hard things before, like [a hard thing they got through]. You can handle this too, one small piece at a time. Nothing is worth losing sleep over. We love you no matter what.

Open when you feel lonely

Everyone feels lonely sometimes, even surrounded by people. Especially in a brand new place. You are such a good friend: [something kind they did for someone]. The right people will find you. In the meantime, call us. We always want to hear your voice.

Open when you can’t sleep

Put the phone down after this (okay, after this letter 😉). Remember when you were little and [a bedtime memory]? Close your eyes and picture it. Sleep tight. We’re thinking of you.

Link idea: a sleepy playlist.

Open when you’re nervous about something big

Butterflies mean you care. That’s a good thing. Whatever it is, you’ve prepared more than you think. Remember [a time they were nervous and crushed it]? Go get ’em. We’re cheering from here.

Open when you really need to talk

Call us. Any time, day or night. We mean it: 3 a.m. is fine. [Your phone numbers] There is nothing you could tell us that would make us love you less.

Family & home

Open when you want to see our faces

Here we are! Hope this makes you smile. [A caption or memory for the photos] We love you to the moon and back.

Open when you miss home cooking

Here is how to make [the family recipe], just like at home: [Ingredients and steps] It won’t taste quite the same in a dorm kitchen, but it’ll be close.

Big & little moments

Open when it’s your birthday

Happy birthday! The day you were born, [a memory from that day]. We’re sorry we can’t be there to embarrass you with a song. Consider yourself sung to. 🎶 Have the best day.

Gift card idea: Amazon.

Open when you need a laugh

Remember the time [a funny family story]? We still laugh about it.

Link idea: a funny family video.

Open when you had a great day

Ahh, we love to hear it! Write down what made today great so you can remember it. And call us, we want details.

Open when you need advice

The best advice I ever got: [a piece of advice that stuck with you]. You already know more than you think. Trust your gut, and when in doubt, call us.

Open when you need to know we’re proud of you

We are so proud of you. Not for any grade or accomplishment, just for who you are. One of my favorite things about you is [something you love about them]. Never forget it.
