“Open when…” letters for college

Homesick nights, finals week, a dining hall that serves the same pasta four days running: college is full of moments you won’t be there for. A stack of “Open when…” letters means you’re there anyway, in your own words, right when they need you.

Each idea comes with a starter letter. The parts in [brackets] are where your own memories go.

Hard days

Open when you’re having a bad day

Some days are just heavy, and that’s okay. It doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong. When I had a day like this at your age, [a time you struggled and what got you through]. Go get some fresh air, drink some water, and remember: tomorrow is a brand new page.

Open when you’re stressed out

Deep breath. In for four, hold for four, out for four. You have handled hard things before, like [a hard thing they got through]. You can handle this too, one small piece at a time. Nothing is worth losing sleep over. We love you no matter what.

Open when you feel lonely

Everyone feels lonely sometimes, even surrounded by people. Especially in a brand new place. You are such a good friend: [something kind they did for someone]. The right people will find you. In the meantime, call us. We always want to hear your voice.

Open when your heart is broken

I’m so sorry. This hurts, and it’s allowed to hurt. Here is what I know: you are lovable, you are worth it, and you won’t feel like this forever. Eat something good, watch something silly, and call us if you want to talk (or not talk).

Open when you need a sober driver

If you’ve been drinking, or whoever was going to drive has, don’t get in that car. Call us, any hour: [your phone numbers]. We’ll come get you or send a ride. No questions tonight and no lecture tomorrow, we promise. We’re just glad you called. There’s a ride in this envelope too, so getting home never depends on money. Getting home safe is always the right call.

Gift card idea: Uber.

You made it! We are so proud of you. A few things I wish I’d known: [your best college advice]. Say yes to things. Say hi to people. Go to class. You’ve got this.

Gift card idea: Netflix.

Open when you’re not getting much playing time
